ABOUT US

About Us2019-04-03T15:17:49+00:00

Our name is CrossFit, but don’t let that scare you.

At our core, we are just people who are ambassadors for healthier, more active and more meaningful living.

CrossFit is simply a mechanism (a very positive one) that gives us structure and an extended community to learn from and be a part of. It’s a part of a greater whole. We use fitness as a means to an end where “we don’t live to exercise… we exercise to live!” We support anyone at any age who calls on fitness to make a positive change in their life.

We value the pursuit of improved health, greater vibrancy, and the courage it takes to try new things in the face of all manner of fear and head trash that might work against you. We value movement and using our bodies in all manner of ways possible (and often in ways previously not believed to be possible!) We value being a safe haven where challenges are managed without judgement.

Lastly, we value banding together as a community to support and encourage and to help each other find an inner strength that is often absent when on our own.

It started over 10 years ago…

when owner, Craig Galloway, decided to take a break from corporate America to pursue his passion for fitness.

The Competitive Athlete Training Zone (CATZ) first opened its doors in Wilmington, Massachusetts in October 2006, having trained thousands of youth and adult athletes since that time.

The decision to change names and affiliate with CrossFit was made after the CATZ franchise folded in 2013. Appreciating the power and value of community, the idea of plugging into an active, growing and passionate global community was too attractive to pass up… so that is when CrossFit ARES was born!

After a few challenging years, current General Manager, Amber Bryant, joined the team followed soon after by Head Coach, Ashton Munroe. This current dynamic duo has pumped all kinds of life back into CrossFit Ares and has us growing and thriving with only even greater positive trajectory for our future!

WE ARE NOT:

Meatheads

We love to lift heavy and get strong… but we are not a gym that caters only to people with big muscles who only care about making them bigger. Get in, spend a full, intense hour training hard and get out and get on with your life.

Fitness Elitists

We care about your results and we care about fitness in our own lives… but we don’t count every calorie, workout 3 hours a day or aspire to single digit body fat (well, maybe a little). We enjoy sweet treats, a frosty beverage and the occasional all you can eat buffet! We just do our best to use moderation, find ways of eating cleaner more often and let our efforts in the gym help balance our scales.

High Pressure

We are a community first. We ONLY want to add people who enhance our community dynamic. That is our strength. It’s what keeps us strong. It’s why we have members who have been with us for a decade. Pressure my close a sale or two, but the community is our top priority and it sells itself when the fit is right.

Judgemental

Starting a new program is difficult… for everyone!  We all start at different levels and we all have our stories. To us, nothing is more satisfying than taking a person with virtually no fitness background and seeing them master skill after skill.  The feeling of accomplishment is so strong, it builds up everyone and inspires even the fittest person in the room to want to work harder and accomplish more.

A Pickup Gym

We love our community and we enjoy socializing and hanging out with one another… but when it come time for training, we absolutely focused. The classes have structure and the work is challenging. An hour flies by and there is little to no down time for idle chit chat… not to mention, it’s pretty hard to flirt when you are out of breath!

WE ARE:

Inclusive

We support everyone and anyone with an interest to better their lives through fitness, exercise and living a healthier lifestyle.

Supportive

Our mission is to help people lead healthier more active lives… it goes beyond it being our job and extends to who we are as people.

Agile

Borrowing a term from software development, we conduct a form of user research every day with our workouts. It’s the ultimate test kitchen. So we NEVER rest on our Laurels and get lazy. Instead, we observe and listen to how our workouts are being received, the results people are getting and constantly look for ways to modify and improve what we doing.

Accountable

We stand behind everything we do and fully guarantee your satisfaction and results.

A Community

We believe the proper environment is THE single most important factor in helping people establish a consistent training routine. We work hard to make CrossFit Ares a fun, positive and welcoming place to be.

Down to Earth, Good People

We feel strongly about the golden rule, don’t take life too seriously, understand that life is busy and sometimes messy and we realize that all of us are just trying to do the best we can.

The key with any gym selection, is to TRY IT! Visit it, hang out there… take advantage of our promotions and introductory offers. No matter what words we put on the page here, nothing compares to how YOU feel when you plug into the environment.  To make any decision without doing so, is short-changing yourself.

I grew up playing sports and went on to wrestle in college. Wrestlers tend to be pretty fitness oriented, so I just stayed a pretty avid fitness enthusiast for years, got certified as a personal trainer and ultimately opened my own athlete strength & conditioning franchise (CATZ) back in 2006.

Who or what inspires you to keep pushing yourself?

So many things. I have a sister with Cerebral Palsy, who can’t do the same things most of us take for granted. I think of her a lot. I also have two boys (Aidan – 10, Collin – 12) who I work hard to set a positive example for. Those are definitely the top “who”.

Bobby R.

Hi, friends! My name is Bobby and I am a part time coach here at CrossFit Ares. I graduated from UMass Amherst with a double major in English and Theater in 2008, and then received my Masters in Education the following year. I teach English and Theater full time at Central Catholic High School (my alma mater) in Lawrence, MA and I moderate several clubs at the school as well. When I am not training at CFA, my partner and I have an eight year old that gives us a run for our money (…o, and three cats, too). I’m always up for an adventure like Tough Mudder (I completed the Full in the summer of ’18) and I’m down for a chill night of cooking at home with my boys. CrossFit Ares and the people who throw down inside that box have changed my life and have given me another place to call home.

Where were you born?

I was born in Methuen, MA and grew up in Lawrence, MA.

How did you get involved in fitness?

I played sports when I was younger (basketball, baseball, tennis), but it was not until I met fellow kickass CFA Coach Courtnee Barchus a few years ago and she introduced me to CrossFit that I became involved in fitness at this level. Back then, I was overweight and exhausted, I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. Once she brought me to CFA, I realized that my only option was to move forward and never look back.

Who or what inspires you to keep pushing yourself?

My partner Kyle and our kiddo Noah for sure. I take care of myself so I can be there for them 100%. And also, each person who walks into CFA. How can you not be inspired witnessing people pushing to be the best version of themselves they can be?

What is your favorite CrossFit workout?

Anything with body movements, gymnastics, and cardio!

What is your favorite HEALTHY meal?

My Breakfast Every Morning: vanilla protein shake with peanut butter, banana, and strawberries; half a green apple, half a grapefruit, wheat toast, a veggie egg muffin (when my partner makes them!), and a tall glass of iced green tea.

What is your favorite CHEAT meal?

Do I have to pick only one? 99’s Gold Fever wings and Uno’s Deep Dish Pizza.

What is one fun fact about you?

In addition to being a CFA coach, I’m also a teacher and an actor. I have been performing in staged shows for just under 20 years. I once starred in a one man show called The SantaLand Diaries where I memorized a 1 hour and 20 minute long monologue, and the character never left the stage the entire time.

What is your number one guilty pleasure?

Again, only one? Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Raw Cookie Dough.

What is your favorite quote?

“If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?”

Neal K.

My name is Neal Keegan I grew up in Salem, New Hampshire. I work in the project management side of a construction company working in the hospitals in downtown Boston. I have competed in boxing wrestling and mixed marital arts for a little over 10 years now. These activities have led me to CrossFit, which has allowed me to rebuild my body after damaging it through sports over the years. Fitness and CrossFit is now one of the biggest parts of my life and will remain that way until I no longer physically can.
